The Florida Composting Council (FCC), Homestead, Florida, will host a composting Workshop on Tuesday, January 14, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event will begin at Fertile Earth Worm Farm, 15150 SW 264 Street, Homestead, FL and will move to Lion Farms, at 14950 SW 212 Street, Miami.

The hands-on workshop is designed for gardeners, homeowners, city and county municipalities, commercial food scrap producers and anyone interested in reducing waste and enriching their soil through composting.

Attendees will learn the fundamentals of composting in Florida, including:

  • the science behind composting and how it benefits the environment;
  • choosing the right composting method for your needs;
  • proper techniques for building and maintaining a compost pile;
  • troubleshooting common composting issues particular to South Florida;
  • tour of both farms, including state-of-the-art gourmet mushroom growing facility at Lion Farms.

Participants also will have the opportunity to see live demonstrations, tour two composting facilities and engage in question and answer sessions with expert composters.

“The future for zero-waste Miami is starting right now,” said Lanette Sobel, founder of Fertile Earth Worm Farm. “Our goal with this workshop is to empower the community to adopt sustainable practices and make a positive impact on the environment.”

“We are very excited to co-host this composting workshop,” said Peter Fedele, owner of Lion Farms. “The more we talk about sustainability and about our love for our planet, the more people will help heal our soils. It’s the only way forward.”

The workshop cost is $40 for FCC members; $50 for non-members. You can register at https://floridacompostingcouncil.org.
