Stacking conveyors provide cost savings and other benefits to compost facilities, according to Terence Bratton, product director, Terex conveying systems.

When operating a grinder, Bratton said, a wheel loader would have to clear the resulting pile every 18 minutes.

“Using a stacking conveyor, you can run for nine hours,” he said.

Further, Bratton said, a wheel loader costs £25 (about $31) per hour to run, compared to £2.75 (about $3.38) per hour to run the stacking conveyor.

CBI featured a 75-foot stacking conveyor fed by an Ecotec Phoenix 1600 trommel screen at its Demo Day event on September 18 at its manufacturing plant in Newton, N.H. Other equipment demonstrated included a Magnum Force 5800BT horizontal grinder a 6800 CT horizontal grinder and a 6400 CT horizontal grinder.

Bratton said Terex recently opened new production lines in South Dakota and Northern Ireland to manufacture its line of stacking conveyors, which will be available through CBI networks and supported by Terex.

“Stacking conveyors help to make a composting operation more efficient and cost effective,” Bratton said. “With a conveyor, the guy running the grinder doesn’t have to stop and wait for the wheel loader to move the pile.”

He said Terex, CBI’s parent company, began to manufacture stacking conveyors two years ago, leveraging the strength of other Terex equipment in their design.

The 75-foot tracked radial stacking conveyor demonstrated on site was powered by a Cat C4.4 diesel engine and was capable of moving 600 tons of material per hour. The unit has a belt width of 42 inches and a maximum discharge height of 35 feet, 10 inches at 23 degrees.

Bratton said the rugged belt makes the machine capable of conveying a variety of materials from compost and soil products to aggregate.

“The machine is containered out of the factory for fast setup,” Bratton said. “You removed it from the container, unfold it and it’s ready to go.”

He said a new 100-foot conveyor also is available, and a telescoping conveyors is expected to be available soon.
